The Changing UAE: Toward Further Business Development of Japanese Companies
[Summary]
The United Arab Emirates (UAE), despite being a small country in the Middle East, has been making its presence felt in recent years in both diplomacy and economic activities.
In regional diplomacy, it has normalized diplomatic relations with Israel (the Abrahamic Accords) and developed a multi-lateral framework, including the I2U2 with the United States, India, and Israel. The success of the Dubai Expo with the Corona disaster is still fresh in its memory, and this year, as an oil-producing country, it has chosen the challenging path of hosting COP28, attracting much attention.
The UAE's business relationship with Japan has been based on the oil and gas sector since before the establishment of the UAE, and has recently been rapidly expanding into the fields of decarbonization, space, food, etc. The UAE has also started granting general visa exemptions to UAE nationals, and the UAE has high potential as an inbound market.
This presentation will introduce the latest trends in the changing UAE and suggest ways to promote exchanges between Japan and the UAE.
